Created by the act of the South Carolina Legislature on Febuary 25, 1897, Bamberg County was named in honor of General Francis Marion Bamberg. Bamberg was the grandson of a Prussian emigrant and served as a Private in Hart's Battery of light artillery during the Civil War and later served as Brigadier General on the staff of Governor Wade Hampton.

Bamberg County is located in the southwestern coastal plains of South Carolina. Bamberg County is bordered by Allendale, Barnwell, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton and Orangeburg Counties.
The Edisto River is Bamberg County's boundary on the northeast, the Salkehatchie River on the southwest with the Little Salkehatchie River runs through the middle of the county.
