There are plenty of things to do in and around Bamberg County, for the sportsman and outdoors lovers there are ample recreational activities and for the casual tourist and history buff Bamberg County offers many sites to see.
  • Broxton Bridge Plantation - Ehrhardt, SC. A second Civil War battle site where breastworks have been perfectly preserved. Tours available by appointment.
  • Town of Bamberg Historic District - Bamberg. 52 properties adjacent to the railroad bed of the "Best Friend of Charleston" are listed on the National Register. The Hooten-Black House is home to the Bamberg County Historical Society, Bamberg County Arts Council and Bamberg County Economic Development Board. The General Bamberg Home was built by General Francis Marion Bamberg for whom the county is named.
Civil War Battle Site
  • "Cotton the World Over" Mural - Bamberg Post Office. Painted by Dorothea Mierisch in 1939 as a New Deal Art Program, one of sixteen in South Carolina. The 6' X 12' mural is oil on canvas.
  • Dane Theater - Located in downtown Denmark, this building was the largest movie theater in the area in the 1950's - seating over 700 spectators! After standing vacant for several years, it has been restored as a cultural center to its original art deco style.
  • Denmark Depot - Denmark. This old train depot houses a visitors information center and an Amtrak station.
William Gilmore Simms
  • John Sojourner House - Located two miles west of US Hwy. 321 and State Rd. 49 intersection. Built in 1858, this house was designated a Century Farm for farm ownership by the same family for over 100 years. It was spared from the torch of General Sherman's soldiers in February of 1865. A black granite memorial to Americans killed in the Vietnam War is located on the property. Tours available by appointment.
  • Mizpah Methodist Church - Located only a few feet off US Hwy. 301 near the Allendale County line; the present church building has been a place of inspiration since 1856. The building survived Gen. W. T. Sherman's burning by the 15th Corps in the March to the Sea.
  • Woodland Plantation - Bamberg. Previous home of South Carolina's most famous author, historian and poet laureate, William Gilmore Simms. He was also a contemporary of American poet William Cullen Bryant. Listed on the National Register. Open by appointment only.
