Adams Run is part of St. Paul's Parish, which was part of
Colleton County until 1911. The cultivation of rice was
historically the main industry in this area. Adams Run is located
near the ACE Basin, home of a National Wildlife Refuge that was
established in 1990 to preserve and protect the area. The
Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto rivers give the basin its name.

Today Adams Run, SC is a rural community with very little
commerce. There is a corner store, a school, and a few other
small businesses but for grocery shopping and other services most
of the town's residents drive to nearby Hollywood or Ravenel.
Due to its positioning on Highway 174 it sees most of its traffic
in the summer time as travelers make their way to Edisto Beach.

Christ Church and
Cemetary
In 1834 Christ Church, Wilton was
organized on Willtown Bluff. The congregation bought the
old Presbyterian Church site in the old town of
Willtown. A Chapel of Ease was built in Adamsville
(Adam's Run) in 1848. Christ Church, Adam's Run
(as pictured), was built in 1886 utilizing some of the
materials from the Willtown church. The Church was
completed in 1887 and is located on Hwy. 174, 1/4 mile
after Hwy. 162.

Willtown, near modern day Adam's Run, was the second
planned town to be established after the relocation of
Charleston in 1682. It was one of two South Carolina precincts
prior to the 1706 Church Act, and after that date served as a
local governmental center (polling place, court of pleas,
magistrate court). It was militarily important in the
protection of the frontier and served as a regional commercial
center.
Willtown was located on a 25 foot high
bluff overlooking the South Edisto River, called the Pon Pon
River in the 18th century. The town site is almost all level,
its lawn interspersed with large oak trees. Only the northern
section is wooded and three early-nineteenth century buildings
are located on the cleared portion: the ca. 1836 Parsonage,
the ca. 1820 Willtown Plantation House, and the remains of a
single column of the ca. 1836 Episcopal church.
Unexposed remains are of a colonial village thought to have
had 80 houses. The town was divided into 62 blocks with most
having four one-acre lots. There were 17 streets with blocks
set aside for an Episcopal church and a school. A market and a
town garden were also provided locations.
