A fine example of Colonial architecture is
represented in the restored mansion at Hampton
Plantation. Adjacent to the Santee River, this
322-acre property was once the centerpiece of a
coastal rice plantation. The mansion last served as
the home of Archibald Rutledge, noted writer and
South Carolina poet laureate. Now a state park near
McClellanville, Hampton continues to welcome
visitors for house tours, picnicking on the grounds,
and natural and historic programs.
