Ashepoo River Located on Highway 17 half way between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA on the Ashepoo River, the quaint community of Green Pond has long has the history of being a weekend favorite for boaters and hunters, not to mention one of the best places in the state to get a speeding ticket.

History and Trivia

Green Pond was the camp for the 5th SC Cavalry Regiment and the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment during the mid to late 1800's.

Endangered Wood StorkVisit the Bear Island Wildlife Management Area

Owned and operated by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources this 12,021 - acre property boasts 5,385 acres of managed wetlands, 5,005 acres of tidal marsh, 1,227 acres of woodlands and 404 acres of agricultural lands. Bear Island provides a habitat for wintering waterfowl, and other wetland wildlife including threatened and endangered species such as wood storks and bald eagles, as well as upland game and nongame species.

There are ample recreational opportunities for the hunters, bird watchers, and nature lovers. Public hunting on the WMA includes waterfowl (by special drawing only), white-tailed deer, mourning dove and small game.
The diverse area provides excellent bird watching, attracting waterfowl, bald eagles, wading birds, shore birds and song birds with two observation platforms and miles of dikes available.
