The Town of Summerville was first inhabited in the early 1700's when, from May to September, plantation families from along the Ashley River left the
risk of malaria in the swamp lands. They came to Summer in the small forest colony soon called Summerville. The town's other pioneers descended from
the 1696 puritans who settled the now defunct river township of Dorchester, thus giving Summerville a heritage spanning three centuries.
