Old Ridgeway Police Station, the world's smallest police station Ridgeway, originally known as New Town, boasts a town population of about 405. The town obtained its present name when the owners of the Charlotte and South Carolina Railway decided not to build the railroad on the Camden route, but to use the "ridge way".
Ridgeway was settled in the late 1700's with residents coming from Virginia and later Charleston. The railroad played a large part in the growth of the town in the early days. Ridgeway was a cotton town until the late 1930's when timber became the staple crop.
The Bank of Ridgeway was one of the few banks which kept its doors open during the Depression.
