Boykin, South Carolina

Battle of Boykin's Mill historic marker Boykin, South Carolina is a charming village that appears to be in a time warp. With a population of roughly 200, a trip to the Boykin Mill community is a step back in time where you can see meal and grits ground by water power at Boykin Mill. In a restored slave house built in 1740, you can witness the making of hand-made brooms on 100 year-old original equipment at the Broom Place.
Located just nine miles from Camden, the historic Boykin Mill community is also a Civil War site. Home of the Battle of Boykin's Mill, this location has been named one of the top 10 Carolinas' Civil War sites by Clint Johnson in his book, Touring the Carolinas' Civil War Sites (Touring the Backroads).

Revolutionary War history buffs should check out the Hobkirk's Hill Battle Site in nearby Camden.

The Boykin Spaniel, a sturdy hunting dog and the official South Carolina canine, originated in Boykin?

The breed sprang from a stray that supposedly trailed a banker home from a Spartanburg church in the early 1900's. The banker sent the dog to his hunting partner L.W. "Whit" Boykin, a planter, land appraiser and well-known sportsman of the Boykin community. Whit Boykin then proceeded to convert the mutt known as "Dumpy" into a prize turkey dog and waterfowl retriever.

Dumpy became the foundation stock for the Boykin Spaniel.
